Walking home today

"He that will learn to pray, let him go to sea." ~ George Herbert

There is a thunderstorm on the wind this afternoon. The sky is filled with light grey clouds that are being pushed along rapidly by gusting winds. It's warm, not hot, and humid. The combination makes me think of the ocean. I keep expecting to hear the call of seagulls or the crash of the waves, or maybe smell the ocean on the wind.

Memories come to mind of summers spent in Florida and family vacations down to the Texas gulf. The weather always so perfect with wind and salt and sun and rain. It brings back memories of sand between my toes and hearing nothing but the ocean waves crashing into the beach. It brings back memories of feeling like I was standing on the edge of the entire vast ocean and thinking I could feel the world move.

I didn't hear the waves or smell the ocean walking home today. All I heard were the trees swaying and bending under the wind. I'm hours away from the nearest shore. But it calls to me still from across the miles.

  1. It's funny how the weather can take us back to our childhood isnt it. Heavy rain on the windows at night always take me back to my bedroom at home and school nights. I'm not sure why - I think it was because for some reason I found it hard to sleep through bad weather and used to panic about not getting up for school.
Not such a lovely vision as your memories though.
    Thanks for sharing..

  2. Wonderful images! The weather here in Dallas is stormy and a chain of tornados are sweeping through the metroplex, which for me brings memories of hiding in hallways and bathrooms!
