I'm only happy when it rains

Picture by me in my front yard.

"Behind the clouds the sun is shining; Thy fate is the common fate of all, Into each life some rain must fall, Some days must be dark and dreary." ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

It's raining.

It's pouring.

The old man isn't snoring yet. (Just kidding, Honey!)

It's been raining all day today. Last night brought some hard and fast thunderstorms. A lot of rain and wind, thunder and lightening, and a little bit of hail. Poor Duke was shaking like a leaf, he HATES thunderstorms. We, on the other hand, crawled into bed and slept like logs with the rain and thunder as background noise. At this time of year this is all a part of west Texas weather. Nothing out of the norm, actually quite reassuring.

Evening thunderstorms, for me, are like your Mother's kisses at night or a warm fleece blanket. Usual and comforting, no matter how violent they want to try and get. Thunderstorms are threaded into the very fabric of my life in west Texas. That might seem like an odd thing to say considering everyone is always wanting to pray for rain. We do have droughts sometimes, ok..most of the time. When it does rain it is never enough....ever. But during this time of the year there seems to be a perfect combination of warm weather during the day and colder weather at night to create these fantastic thunderstorms. As a kid, my friends and I would take lounge chairs outside and actually sit in the rain and watch the lightening dance across the sky. It wasn't a scary thing, it was thrilling and beautiful.

There has been no thunder or lightening today...just rain. A lot of rain. Lots and lots of rain. I can handle it for a day, maybe two..but after that I hope the sun comes back out and warms everything up. We need the rain to nourish the trees and the grass and the flowers. Afterwards we'll need to sun to encourage it all to grow.
